Hi, I’m Paula

I love being an instructional designer because I learn so much by interacting with fascinating subject matter experts, talented colleagues, and new technology. These experiences put me in a happy place.

The online college courses that I design are best viewed on the organization’s internal systems, but I have some recent screenshots below. I also use this portfolio to show my latest creative instructional design project.

Description:

This choose-your-own path interactive activity is designed for visitors to Hood River and the Columbia Gorge. It helps folks think about the land and water sport activities in which they may want to engage. This is a fun subject and I wanted to keep it light with trivia quizzes and easy-to-achieve certificates. Working with subject matter experts (SMEs) is one of my favorite things about working in higher education, but in this case, I could be my own SME since I moved to Hood River about twenty years ago, just to do outdoor sports.

More information:

  • I wanted users not only choose their own path but to decide how much they would like to read. The interactions menus in Adobe Captivate turned out to have just the tools I needed to allow users to tailor their experience.

  • There are a lot of land and sport activities to choose from in this learning activity and I wanted to use icons throughout. Six months ago, I would have produced them in Photoshop but for this project I used ChatGPT with good results.

  • Accessibility is an important focus for me so I was glad to use visual properties in Adobe Captivate to add alt text and to hide eye candy from the screen reader.

  • If the images that I used are not public domain, they are noted with the Creative Commons information. In this project I had the opportunity to use pictures taken by me and my friends too. There are some more fall hiking and rail-biking pictures below.

Experience the Project

Online Course Projects: I create course maps that detail the full class content with faculty and other subject matter experts. Then I work in learning management systems (LMS) to upload and edit content. Currently, I am working in two LMS: Open edX and zyBooks.
